a man has faced court after allegedly scamming would-be renters out of more than $60,000 over social media.
police allege scott maxwell jeffries ran an “elaborate” rental scam where he would advertise properties on social media and ask potential tenants to pay him a bond.
the 35-year-old appeared via video link in the parramatta local court this morning and was granted bail under the condition he reports to police daily and continues to reside at his address in rhodes.
“mr jeffries you’re very fortunate to secure bail. if you commit any further offences or breach your bail conditions, i won’t be granting you bail again,” magistrate peter feather told him.
mr jeffries was charged with 34 offences, including obtaining a financial advantage by deception, dealing with the proceeds of crime, and using a fake identity.
the alleged offences involved properties in liverpool, wentworthville, auburn, parramatta and bondi, which were advertised on social media between february 2022 and october 2023.
the court also heard mr jeffries had previously been convicted of a number of offences involving obtaining property by deception between 2015 and 2020.
his lawyer conceded that it was likely that if he was convicted of the current charges, he would face a term of imprisonment.
mr jeffries was arrested outside a business in the western sydney suburb of merrylands yesterday.
police released vision of mr jeffries being handcuffed on the street and driven away.
officers also searched a home in rhodes on thursday where they seized a number of devices and documents for forensic examination.
